Cumbia's rhythm is instantly recognisable and oddly hard to describe: a two-step that seems to drag its back foot, driven by the guacharaca scraper and a drum pattern that leans rather than pushes. Accordion usually carries the melody. It came from Colombia's Caribbean coast and spread across a continent, picking up a different accent everywhere it landed.
